JOANNEUM RESEARCH, Austria's largest provincially owned research institution
seeks a highly motivated student for a diploma thesis (approximately 6 months)
and a PhD-student for the Institute for Medical Technologies and Health Management,
Graz, Austria
Medical research needs sophisticated analytical methods to observe chemical pathways in the interstitial compartment of human beeings. The interstitial fluid is surrounding each cell, and its chemical composition is of enormous medical interest.
The scope of the diploma thesis involves the synthesis and testing of new monolithic separation media for nano-HPLC-MS for its use in medical research. These new materials will be prepared by Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP), a highly controlled type of polymerization. ROMP will be used to downscale separation media to 50 µm i.d. Analytical characterization (HPLC, GPC, ELMI, etc.) and their separation performance for real samples will be tested. Monolithic separation media have multiple advantages for example: higher separation performance, lower back-pressure, enhanced mass transport and the easy preparation procedure.
The PhD thesis will examine medical research topics by using nano-LC-MS. These analytical methods will be used to develop and characterize new drugs for the therapie of chronical diseases.
Interested candidates are encouraged to apply by submitting a resume/vitae
and cover letter, to the address below, or give a call to Dr. Sinner.
Experience in polymer and analytical science is welcomed but not necessary.
